It is argued that the massive molecular clouds observed are produced by a process of growth via cloud-cloud collisions. Cloud mass spectra are calculated based on this model. A preliminary comparison between the theoretical results and observations suggests that the lifetime of molecular clouds is more than 2 x 10 to the 8th years. Implications of this result are discussed.
