Shock wave chemistry is suggested as the likely explanation for the high water abundance which has been recently detected in Orion by Phillips et al. The existence of such a shock and its inferred properties are in agreement with other observations of Orion such as the broad velocity feature and H2 vibration emission. Shock waves are proposed as the likely explanation for high water abundances observed in other sources such as the strong H2O masers.
