The paper shows that the large intrinsic polarization of the infrared carbon star IRC+10216 can be explained by the scattering of light of the star on the oriented particles in the space near the star. Paramagnetic relaxation near the photosphere for comparatively large fields is the most probable orientation mechanism in view of the time of alignment of particles compared with the disorienting thermal motion of the gas. The cyclic variability of the degree of polarization can be explained by the change in the size of the dust particles resulting from their partial evaporation at the phases of maximal brightness of the object.
