Infrared photographs of S 106 obtained with an image tube camera at 0.92 micron (I) and 0.70 (R) are analyzed which show a stellar object lying within the central dust lane. This object is shown to be the single exciting source of the bipolar nebula and to be embedded in an obscuring flat disk of 21 mag visual extinction. A distance of less than 1 kpc is derived for S 106.
