Simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric (UBV) observations of the bright YY Orionis star S CrA have been carried out. During the observing period S CrA showed strong irregular spectroscopic and photometric variations. Certain emission lines changed their intensity by more than a factor 2 within one hour. The visual brightness varied up to 0.2 mag within one hour and up to 0.6 mag from night to night. The strength of the redshifted absorption components of the higher Balmer lines was found to be positively correlated with the visual brightness. The absorption components decrease in strength when S CrA is bluer in U-B. The variations are interpreted assuming that they are caused by density fluctuations in the infalling matter. The observed very rapid variations are explained by rapid changes of the physical conditions in the shock cooling region caused by small scale density fluctuations in the infalling envelope.
