During the degenerate helium core flash the finite time-scale for convection to transport carbon out of the burning region leads to a mean molecular weight gradient which greatly reduces the efficiency of convection, dams up the heat flux, and increases the violence of the flash. The anomalous behavior of Edwards' (1969) model compared to all other calculations of the helium core flash is due in large part to his inclusion of this effect. It is suggested that the flux dam will result in mixing and s-process nucleosynthesis in low-luminosity giants.
