We give a short account of the history of sunspot observations, and of historic studies of the sunspot period. Using a compilation of sunspot index numbers, the variability of the sunspot cycle is discussed from an instructive point of view and as a demonstration of the O-C method applied to a unique database covering more than three centuries of a standardised variability index.
