We present preliminary results from the simultaneous H I Lyman alpha observations carried out during 1-3 November 1998 with the UVCS/SOHO and UVCS/Spartan instruments. The main objective of this mission was to provide information on the physical conditions of the solar corona during the rising phase of the solar activity cycle. The analysis of the H I Lyman alpha profile measurements made with both instruments provides us with hydrogen kinetic temperatures. These observations are also used to update the calibration of the UVCS/SOHO instrument. This cross-calibration provides continuity between the earlier results of Spartan 201 and more recent results from SOHO, and consequently it provides information on how the corona varies from the period before the activity minimum to the period approaching the time of maximum solar activity. This work is supported by NASA under Grants NAG 5-613 and NAG5-3192 to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
