Solar Eclipses: Forecasts, Solar Eclipses: History Of Astronomy

The 28 (or 27) lunar mansions were used before the discovery of saros to
predict the recurrence of eclipse seasons. The seven days of the week
derived from a quarter of the lunar sideral month. In his work Res
Rusticae the Latin author Varro mentioned the period of seven days which
is a trace of eclipse production in pre-protohistoric Europe.
