Deriving of the geometry and properties of dust around Herbig Ae/Be stars is a complex problem. Although with the advent of the Infrared Space Observatory detailed spectra of the circumstellar dust have become available, modelling of these spectra alone, without spatial information, may still result in ambiguous results. In this paper we illustrate certain degeneracies in the models, focusing on two well studied Herbig Ae stars AB Aurigae and HD 163296. Although we concentrate on optically thin models, to some extent the modelling pitfalls will be independent of optical thickness of the material. Useful constraints and insight can therefore be gained from such relatively simple models. Based on these results we propose a geometrical model for the circumstellar matter around AB Aur and HD 163296 in which both an optically thick as well as an optically thin region are present.
