The process by which the hot intergalactic medium (IGM) is formed in groups is poorly understood. Several lines of evidence suggest a link with galaxy evolution and the destruction of the cold gas component of spiral galaxies, and our recent observations of Stephan's Quintet indicate that much of the hot IGM in that evolving group consists of shock heated tidally stripped cold gas. To test whether this mechanism is generally applicable, we propose to observe four other spiral-rich groups which have mixed galaxy populations and are in the process of building a hot IGM. One of these, HCG15, hosts a unique radio/X-ray structure indicative of a powerful merger-driven shock, and we request a deeper observation to determine the nature of this feature.
