Theoretical and experimental results on absorption by CO2 infrared Q-branches are presented. Studies have been made for various pressures, temperatures, and the perturbers N2, O2, Ar, and He. Bands of different symmetries, including parallel and perpendicular transitions have been investigated for symmetric and asymmetric isotopomers. The measured spectra are analyzed using a line-mixing model based on the Energy Corrected Sudden approximation. The relaxation operator for each perturber has been constructed from 4 parameters only. Comparisons between measured and computed spectra demonstrate the quality of the approach. The more remarkable characteristics which have been pointed out and analyzed are the following: The first is that collisions with He lead to significantly narrower profiles than those obtained for the CO2-(N2, O2, or Ar) systems. The second point is that vibrational angular momenta have a significant influence on the Q-branch shape through dipole matrix elements and the contributions of parity changing and conserving collisions. The last is that absorption by all isotopomers can be modeled with a single set of parameters. Finally, consequences on absorption and emission in the atmosphere are discussed.
