We propose deep XMM-Newton observations for three dwarf elliptical galaxies, NGC147, NGC185, and NGC205, in the Local Group, in order to measure and quantify the dispersion of the collective X-ray emissivity from old stellar populations. Precise knowledge of this kind is crucial not only for understanding the relevant stellar astrophysics but also for reliably disentangling and quantifying the thermal emission from diffuse hot gas in nearby galaxies.
