Supernovae: Explosions

Scientific paper

The authors discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for successful explosion in the prompt explosion model of type II supernovae. They give a very simple and clear criterion: a necessary condition that MOC = Mcore-MIC < 0.43 Msun, Mcore, MIC and MOC being the masses, in solar units, of the whole iron core, the inner and the outer core, and a sufficient condition that Eshock > MOC/Msun×20 foes, Eshock being the energy of the shock wave and 1 foe = 1051erg = 1044J. The criterion has been verified by the results of numerical computation in terms of "equivalent thickness".
