This paper addresses basic aspects of photometric standardisation and calibration which have a direct effect on variable-star photometry presented and discussed at this meeting. The core principle of multiband photometry is elaborated, and problems encountered in multisite observing are listed. These difficulties are illustrated by examples: combining incongruent passbands, CCD saturation, handling outliers, and applying decorrelation techniques. The point is made that there is a strong need for systematic teaching of calibrated photometric measurement.
