This is one of the review papers celebrating the centenary of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, see also 004.037. Research on Be stars from the early work of Merrill and Struve to the present is reviewed, including recent observations from space. A number of models which have been proposed to explain the Be phenomenon are discussed, and the evolutionary status of Be stars is considered.
