A simplified derivation of Penston's (1969) self-similar solution for the collapse of a cold self-gravitating sphere is presented. The general solution is found and illustrated for three different cases. The general relativity of the metrics to which the class of self-similar solutions give rise is discussed. These metrics are not self-similar except for the case where rho approaches 1/r squared. The solutions represent the formation and growth by accretion of the central star or galaxy in simple analytic terms.
