Scientific paper

As a first step towards a thorough analysis of evolution properties of galaxies in the optical, radio and far-IR bands, the authors have derived their local luminosity functions exploiting in particular a complete sample of 1671 galaxies observed in the Arecibo survey at 2.4 GHz and the IRAS data on them. The global luminosity functions have been analysed in terms of the contributions of four classes (normal spirals and irregulars; ellipticals and S0s; starburst/interacting; Seyferts) whose optical, far-IR and radio emissions are, at least partly, due to different astrophysical processes. Correlations between the luminosities in the three wavebands are discussed for each class.
