The relationship between the cross-tail potential drop as the input function and the ionospheric currents, the ring current, and other quantities as the output functions was investigated using an equivalent circuit model. In this model, the energy transfer from the solar wind to the inner magnetosphere and the ionosphere is assumed to consist of two parts: (1) the direct coupling between the solar wind and the polar ionosphere through the tail magnetopause, and (2) the indirect coupling through the magnetotail plasma sheet. It was found that the circuit model could correctly reproduce several observed behaviors of the magnetosphere for the geomagnetic storm that took place on October 30, 1978.
