We have given a new series of lectures to introduce incoming graduate students to the type of (mostly unix based) computing they will likely find useful doing their research and solving homework problems. The lectures were short (1 hour) and only 7 in total, and therefor could only scratch the surface of what might get them on their way. We also face the problem of a very diverse background in the student population. It can also be argued that this type of course is not useful, since they will not be using it
