The basic conservation laws for mass, momentum and energy along flow tubes from the sun to the Earth, together with observational constraints coming from remote sensing observations of the corona and in-situ measurements of the wind may be used to derive scaling laws relating the asymptotic solar wind properties to the source regions on the sun. This paper reviews and compares theories of solar wind acceleration based on such conservation principles, stressing the different approximations involved.
