Recent observational evidence has confirmed the inhomogeneity of Type Ia supernovae. The intrinsic differences, that also entail systematic correlation between luminosity and photospheric velocity at maximum light on one side and rate of decline of the light curve on the other (the Pskovskii-Branch effect), are hard to explain by the standard model of deflagrating C+O white dwarfs. The authors discuss possible alternatives to this model. They favor off-center explosions in partially solid white dwarfs.
