The importance of relaxation and particle noise in N-body simulations of disk galaxies is discussed. It is shown that particle noise and relaxation are equivalent in disk simulations and that some calculations have been seriously affected by them. However, the best simulations are almost free of relaxation effects. The 'noise' in real galaxies is also discussed and may be nonnegligible. Relaxation is an important but controllable problem for N-body simulation of disks, and some of the confusion about the criteria for global stability of disks may have resulted from spurious results caused by relaxation. Some simple analytical and numerical tests for relaxation are proposed which could be used as diagnostics for simulations in order to avoid these problems in the future.
