We present the first preliminary results from GALEX regarding the UV galaxy luminosity function in the local universe. As a part of its mission, the GALEX satellite is performing an All-Sky Survey (AIS) in two bands centered at 1550 Å (FUV) and 2200 Å (NUV), that reaches AB magnitudes of 21 in both bands. From matching of the GALEX AIS data with catalogs from available low-redshift surveys, we create FUV and NUV magnitude-limited redshift samples. We present a preliminary calculation of the FUV and NUV luminosity functions and compare the results with previous measurements of the UV luminosity function from the FOCA experiment.
GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) is a NASA Small Explorer, launched in April 2003. We gratefully acknowledge NASA's support for construction, operation, and science analysis for the GALEX mission.
