The plate-overlap technique originally devised by Eichhorn is
reformulated using a new principle of statistical estimation. The new
principle can be applied to any problem that has invariants. Indeed, the
presentation herein truly imposes the constraints Eichhorn sought to
bring to bear in the first place - the uniqueness of a star's position.
