The authors used radio continuum surveys at 408 MHz and at 1420 MHz to calculate a map of spectral indices of the Galactic radio continuum emission across the northern sky for declinations δ ≥ -19° at an angular resolution of 2°. For this purpose the calibration of these surveys has been critically revised. A comparison of the survey data with some source catalogues and with older drift scans across the sky has been made to prove the reliability of the data. The resulting map shows significant variations of the temperature spectral index β (TB ∝ ν-β) between β = 2.3 and β = 3.0. The areas with steepest spectra are that of the North Polar Spur, of Loop III and for the region with l < 55° and |b| < 15°. A flattening of the spectra towards higher Galactic latitudes is noted in the anticentre direction.
