We investigate the relationship between black hole mass, M {BH}, and host galaxy velocity dispersion for QSOs in Data Release 1 (DR1) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, www.sdss.org), using an automated spectrum fitting routine. We derive M {BH}, from the broad Hβ line width and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion (σ *) from the [O iii] narrow line width (σ { {[O III}]}). The results agree in the mean with the M {BH}---σ *, relationship for nearby galaxies. Use of Mg ii and [O ii] in place of Hβ and [O iii] allows work at redshifts up to z ˜ 1.
