A multilevel phenomenological model of the solar convection zone is examined. The concept of cophasal regions on the solar surface is used to derive quantitative relations in good agreement with observations for the kinematic parameters of sunspot groups. It is found that the effective depth of the convection zone varies with the phase of the solar activity cycle.
