Using the Heinrich-Hertz Telescope (HHT) we have performed a detection survey in the dust continuum at 870 micron of a subsample of 29 late-type galaxies from the ISOPHOT Virgo Cluster Deep Sample (Tuffs et al. 2002). The 29 observed galaxies are those detected by ISOPHOT at all Far-Infrared (FIR) survey wavelengths (60, 100 & 170 micron) plus a few Im and BCD galaxies with detections at 170 micron. The measurements with the HHT are complementary to the FIR measurements since they primarily probe the mass and surface density of dust in the sample galaxies, rather than the luminosity. Our HHT measurements will allow an unambiguous determination of the temperatures, masses, and basic morphology of the cold dust component detected by ISOPHOT in the galaxies from the ISOPHOT Virgo Cluster Deep Sample. The HHT observations are also essential for the derivation of star formation rates and star formation histories, which will be obtained by modelling the UV-submm SED of the targets. Finally, our observations will elucidate the nature of the dominant very cold dust emission component discovered by ISOPHOT in BCD, Im and dwarf spiral galaxies.
