Holmberg's (1974) data on the cosecant law for clusters of galaxies and a cloud model of the interstellar medium are used to show that variations in the numbers of clusters due to changes in visibility conditions (as specified by the intragalactic 'G factor') should be large. The existence of a relation between the distribution of distant clusters and interstellar hydrogen density is cited in support of this conclusion. It is shown that variations associated with the interstellar medium are also decisive for the apparent distribution of galaxies to 19th magnitude at high galactic latitudes. The reality of previously observed superclusters with angular diameters of the order of several degrees is called into question. It is suggested that spurious superclusters could arise as a result of 'windows' in the interstellar medium and the variability of observing conditions for clusters of galaxies. It is concluded that a serious argument against the reality of the Local Supercluster may be posed if the mechanism governing the relation between the apparent distributions of interstellar hydrogen and bright galaxies is discovered.
