The standard (Peters-Mathews) model for binary star orbital damping under gravitational wave emission is completely solved in analytic form, for any value of the initial orbital eccentricity, resulting into a universal decay scenario. The limits of validity of the model are established in a general handy form. Possible extensions of these results to higher-order post-Newtonian models are discussed.
