Magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs) are an excellent laboratory for the study of the behavior of plasmas in the presence of magnetic fields and high temperature and gravity. Understanding these physical processes requires the ability to correctly interpret observations of magnetic CVs based on physically accurate models of the accretion processes occuring within these systems. Here we present results from a continuing effort to model the magnetically controlled accretion stream that impacts the white dwarf surface in magnetic CVs. To create these models, we employ the University of Chicago radiative magnetohydrodynamic code, FLASH. We demonstrate how the white dwarf mass and initial conditions, such as temperature and density of the inflowing material, affect the conditions of the accretion stream.
The software used in this work was in part developed by the DOE-supported ASCI/Alliance Center for Astrophysical Thermonuclear Flashes at the University of Chicago.
