The significance of the H-alpha/forbidden-N II line intensity ratio at a wavelength of 6583 A for the study of nebulae is discussed, with particular emphasis on the determination of nitrogen abundance. A new, relatively sophisticated model of an H II region is constructed and used to show the inadequacy of existing models in interpreting the above ratio in terms of nitrogen abundance. The present model is compared to Harrington's homogeneous model (1969) for the NGC 7662 planetary nebula.
