The influence of volatile dust on the infrared excess of H II regions is studied. It is found that the presence of a large fraction of volatile dust may cause the infrared excess to be smaller for compact H II regions than for more diffuse ones or the dust optical depth to appear to be anticorrelated with column density. Some implications for the interpretation of observational data are also discussed.
