The kind of information that can be obtained from the solar infrared spectrum as compared to information obtained from other spectral regions is discussed and some theoretical considerations relating to the further development of solar continuous-IR spectral analysis are set forth. The review gives attention to such areas as sources of opacity in the solar IR spectrum, the use of IR spectra to construct solar atmosphere models, and difficulties associated with solar IR observations.
