The polarization of zebra patterns is explained in terms of peculiarities in the nonlinear conversion of longitudinal waves excited in a magnetic trap by the cyclotron instability into electromagnetic radiation. It is shown that depending on specific conditions in the excitation region, the bands observed in solar radio emission may have either weak or strong circular polarization with the sense of rotation corresponding to an ordinary wave. Two scenarios are discussed for zebra-pattern generation: excitation of upper-hybrid-resonance plasma waves in either a point source with a homogeneous magnetic field or an extended inhomogeneous source.
