Results are reported for the initial calibration of a new photometric index based on measurements of the strength of the Balmer H-alpha line. These results are presented for Hyades dwarfs. Comparisons are made to spectral types determined from both R-I and Balmer H-beta indices. It is anticipated that these results will lead to improved estimates of interstellar reddening.
This research is supported by the Brigham Young University Department of Physics and Astronomy as well as by a Small Research Grant from the American Astronomical Society.
