This review summarizes available information on binary X-ray sources, their physical properties, evolution, and radiation mechanisms. Parameters needed to specify the orbit of a close binary system are discussed along with ways of determining orbits from observations, the evolution of close binary systems is described, and the formation of compact objects in such systems is outlined. Comprehensive X-ray, radio, and optical data are presented for the sources (and their optical counterparts) Her X-1, Cen X-3, Cyg X-1, Vel XR-1, 2U 1700-37, SMC X-1, Cyg X-3, and Cir X-1. Models describing the general features of X-ray binaries and specific models for each system considered are reviewed, giving detailed attention to accretion in binary systems, accretion from a stellar wind, the radiation spectrum of an accretion disk, instabilities in an accretion disk, the role of magnetic fields in accretion, the polarization of X-ray sources, and energy generation in the outer layers of compact stars. Rotation of a magnetized neutron star and magnetic-field twisting are evaluated as nonaccretion sources of energy.
