After a brief discussion of the historical development of stellar interferometry, the astronomical potential of high angular resolution stellar interferometry is considered. Attention is given to interferometric measurements of emergent fluxes and effective temperatures for single stars, stellar radii, binary stars, and Cepheid variables. Attention is also given to the design of different types of high angular resolution stellar interferometers including the intensity interferometer and three kinds of amplitude interferometers: the Michelson, heterodyne, and speckle interferometers.
