The question is considered of where the recently discovered superheavy elements 116, 124, and 126 are likely to have been formed. It is noted that such superheavy elements must exist in the outer layers of neutron stars and that ideal conditions for the production of such nuclei are found in the disruption of a neutron star. Two mechanisms of neutron-star disruption are envisaged: tidal disruption due to a close encounter with a black hole and collapse of a neutron star to a black hole after it has accreted sufficient material for its mass to exceed the maximum mass for a stable neutron star.
