The present note discusses the system set up by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to deal with current requirements for nomenclature on the surfaces of the planets and their satellites. The procedure for approving proposed names is outlined, the responsibilities of the IAU nomenclature Task Groups are identified, and seven basic principles for planetary nomenclature are listed. Guidelines are given concerning the naming of surface features after people, living things, inanimate objects, or abstract concepts. It is noted that in anticipation of future needs, banks of names will be prepared in advance so that suitable nomenclature of a general basic system may be supplied to cartographers without delay.
