The main observational needs of X-ray astronomy are briefly reviewed and the existing techniques with their limitations are discussed. Some promising new developments are introduced and the properties of some important systems in terms of signal/noise ratio are considered. The relevance of on-board computers to this branch of space science is stressed, and a final summary is given of the requirements for research and development in the near future.
