The magnetopause is believed to be a tangential discontinuity between the solar wind and the geomagnetic field. Three kinds of singular tangential discontinuities are identified according to whether the singular point at which all magnetic-force lines intersect is a stagnation point (first kind), a neutral point (second kind), or a combination of both (third kind). Some consequences are determined which result from the equilibrium of any kind of singular discontinuity in a continuous medium described by the ideal MHD equations with isotropic or anisotropic pressure. Analyses are performed which demonstrate that no kind of discontinuity can be in equilibrium in the presence of nonuniform external pressure if the fluid within the discontinuity does not move. A plasma configuration bounded by a singular discontinuity should therefore be dynamic. Based on the concept of a dynamic equilibrium plasma configuration, estimates are made for the thickness of the return-flow layer and the convection electric field in the magnetosphere as well as for the magnetic-field jump at the magnetopause
