The emission rate of the galactic Lyman alpha line (1216 A) in the vicinity of the solar system is deduced from (1) a consideration of the available data on Balmer alpha (6563 A), (2) recent information on the UV absorption properties of interstellar dust, and (3) a simple solution of the Lyman alpha radiative transfer problem. It is found that the emission rate should be less than 10 rayleighs. This compares with recent observations by Bertaux et al. (1976) indicating a contribution to the interplanetary Lyman alpha emission of less than 50 rayleighs. This resolves an ambiguity in the theoretical interpretation of interplanetary Lyman alpha emission, and will allow a more accurate determination of the nearby interstellar gas temperature.
