A model equation devised to simulate the essential mathematical features of the secular eigenvalue problem of stars in the presence of abundance perturbations is solved by means of an integral-equation technique. This method rigorously establishes the existence of a continuous spectrum. Moreover, it is shown that the heuristic finite-difference approximation to a certain class of singular differential systems which possess a continuous spectrum is a convenient tool for the investigation of the associated eigenfunctions.
