Attention is drawn to the ambiguities and large uncertainties inherent in the interpretation of infrared dust shell spectra. To quantify these uncertainties, a simple approximation to the monochromatic luminosities of shells is derived which exhibits the relation to what are thought to be basic dust shell parameters. Ranges of parameter values, all leading to one and the same spectrum (within very narrow observational limits), can thus be easily identified and shown to be often excessively large. Some suggestions that might seem to alleviate this situation are discussed briefly.
