The flight forms show that some, but not all, tektites have traveled at hypersonic velocities through the earth's atmosphere. Bjork has shown by computer techniques that a meteorite with a mass of some 1012 grams, striking the earth with a a velocity of 20 km/sec, makes a considerable impression on the earth's surface, a crater some 10 km in diameter is produced, and much of the material at the precrater surface is ejected upward at various angles with velocities approaching that of impact. This material is used to ascertain the time of flight and the range of the ejected debris, since it is presumed that debris contains the fused tektite glass.
