A model is developed for SS 433 that fits the observed radial-velocity curve of the moving emission lines better than the kinematic model of Abell and Margon (1979). In the model, SS 433 is considered to be a close binary system of orbital period P2 = 13d, comprising an optical star and a neutron star surrounded by a gaseous accretion disk precessing with a period P1 = 164d. The magnetic dipole axis of the rapidly spinning neutron star is normal to the rotation axis. Relativistic particles stream out of the magnetic poles and strip a pair of gas jets from the accretion disk. The physical processes that should operate in such a system are examined, and several predictions of observable phenomena are presented.
