Discoveries concerning the planet Saturn, its rings and satellites made by the Voyager 1 spacecraft are discussed. As many as 1000 discrete bands making up the ring system have been detected, including the braided outer F band, which have shown to consist of chunks of ice embedded with rock. Photographs of convective cells, jet streams and spots in the upper atmosphere, although obscured by a high-altitude haze, may lead to a resolution of global circulation patterns within the planet. In addition to the nine Saturn satellites detected from the ground, Voyager has discovered six additional moons: three orbiting just outside the principle rings, one occupying the same orbit as the large moon Dionne, and a pair of irregularly shaped moons in close orbits just beyong the rings. Surface features including craters, rifts and bright streaks have been observed on the large satellites Mimas, Rhea, Tethys and Dione, although Enceladus appeared to be free of craters and Iapetus is characterized by hemisphere of greatly contrasting brightness. Finally, Titan, the largest of Saturn's moons, was found to be covered by a thick layer of haze and clouds in a dense nitrogen atmosphere possibly containing complex prebiotic hydrocarbons.
