An abondoned solar power plant has been converted to an instrument for measuring the Cherenkov light component of extensive air showers induced by cosmic particles. The Atmospheric Gamma Ray Observatory (AGRO) has been operating during the Winter months of 2001-02 and a large sample of Cherenkov events has been collected. Our prelimary results indicate an excess of gamma ray showers emanating from the direction of the Crad Nebula, which is a known gamma ray source and the standard candle of gamma ray astrophysics. In late January 2002, we detected an abnormally high flux of gamma rays from the AGN source, MK421, which is known to have flared at other times in the recent past. This flaring event was confirmed by two other experiements. I will discuss the experiment and present preliminary data on Mk421.
